Happy May everyone!

The time has come again where I talk about how fast April went by and how I can’t believe it’s already May…but seriously. Summer is only a month away! What???

I have a lot of new things that I have discovered this month so let’s just dive right in!

Food Favourites

SWEET. POTATOES.

Two words, one love. You don’t know a good sweet potato until you season it with cinnamon and coconut sugar. It takes it to a whole new level. Yumness factor = one hundred billion trillion zillion…is that a number?

Orange, Pineapple Lemon, Ginger Smoothie

This is one of those, “I will use whatever I have left in the fridge” kind of smoothies. I blended a few mandarins with a half of a pineapple, a squirt of lemon juice and about a 1/2 inch of ginger. After running 8km it was super refreshing to say the least and I have been drinking it almost every day this month! It’s a great change from my typical green smoothies.

Vanilla Powder

This is kind of an odd one, but I promise it’s life changing! I have always used vanilla extract but I kept hearing everyone rave about how much better vanilla powder was…and they were right! Vanilla powder compared to vanilla extract has so much of a vibrant flavour and when added to banana ice cream makes it taste like cookie dough. I don’t even know how but it’s magical, that’s for sure.

I couldn’t help but include these cookies in my favourites because they are just that good! They are so versatile and easy, you just can’t go wrong!

Beauty Favourites

Emani Full Matte Powder Foundation

Beauty without cruelty! Being vegan is so much more than the food you eat. Emani is a new cosmetic brand that is 100% vegan and not tested on animals. Their powder foundation and concealer offer decent coverage yet still look natural. They are lightweight, do not irritate my skin and are free of parabens, talc and all of those nasty chemicals. It’s a win-win for me!

Emani Full Lip Shine

Screen Shot 2015-05-02 at 12.36.39 PMEmani also has a really wide range of products, you won’t have any troubles finding what you need. Their lip glosses are some of my favourites. They don’t dry out your lips and smell really nice too which is always a bonus. 😉

NYX Butter Gloss

So, I may or may not have an obsession with lip gloss…in my opinion they are just so much better than lipstick! NYX is yet another cruelty-free brand and is also relatively inexpensive compared to Emani. My Favourite shade is called ‘Tiramisu’ and it is perfect for an everyday neutral lip. These glosses are extremely moisturizing and make your lips look plump and luscious!

Apple Cider Vinegar

You might be wondering: Alexa, why is apple cider vinegar not in the food portion of this blog post? Well, let me tell you, ACV is the ultimate beauty food! While it’s great as a salad dressing, when diluted with water and just drank straight up it is great for not only your oral hygiene but for your skin! ACV has loads of antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can even aid in ‘cleaning’ out your digestive tract…yeah I went there. Once or twice a week I also apply my ACV to my hair as a leave-in treatment while I am in the shower and just wash it out after a few minutes. This helps to restore the PH balance to the oil glands and after a few uses will leave your hair soft and silky. I have noticed a huge difference just by drinking 2 tbsp. daily. You may not like the taste at first, but if you like Kombucha I promise it won’t be too bad! I could rave on and on about the amazing benefits of ACV, but you will just have to try it for yourself!

Oil Pulling

I have always been skeptical of oil pulling…However, I was on Instagram (surprise) and I noticed it was gaining some publicity in the raw/raw till’ 4 foodie community so I figured I would give it a go! I am planning on writing a much more in-depth post after I have done it for awhile longer, but so far I am noticing a difference in the whiteness of my teeth and overall I think it is a great addition to any morning routine!

Miscellaneous Favourites:

The China Study

I have been wanting to read this book for ages. This month I have finally gotten around to it. It’s definitely a longer one and not necessarily a light read (I have yet to finish), but I have already learned and retained so much information. The studies these doctors completed are so comprehensive and really open your eyes. It’s not even about the weight loss, heart disease and all that jazz. It’s so insightful to our anatomical make-up and really de-bunks all of the myths, propaganda and pseudo science we have been force fed for generations. And to put the cherry on top, all of the scientific evidence is there to support the claims. If you love science, nutrition and health this book is a must read!

Ted Talks

They’re all the rage. There are an infinite amount of them and so many speakers and genres to choose from, whether it be motivational speeches, life experiences, or my personal favourite: nutrition. Shocker right!? Either way listening to these talks always leaves you with a different perspective and in my case, way too much information for my own good! Here are some of my favourites:
