What I ate today on Banana Island

Hi everyone!

I woke up to an abundance of ripe bananas so I took it upon myself to take a trip to the Banana Island!

After all I am The Potassium Princess. 😉

If you don’t know what a ‘mono island’ is, in short, you simply eat one fruit of your choice for the entire day to give your digestion a break and help your body to heal and detoxify. I have also done a Pineapple Island and a Mango Island since embarking on this lifestyle and I really enjoy the simplicity.

Some people can go up to 3 months just eating bananas! That doesn’t sound very a’peeling (gotta love the fruit jokes) to me, but I am going to try and stick to this until all of my nanners are gone!

Pre Breakfast: Oil Pulling

Just this week I have begun oil pulling in the morning. The concept is you take a tablespoon of virgin coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth on an empty stomach for up to 20 minutes. You then spit it out, rinse with salt water and brush your teeth as normal. It supposedly draws toxins from your body, whiten your teeth and overall promotes good oral hygiene!

Breakfast: Vanilla Nice Cream

For breakfast I simply blended 5 frozen bananas with 1 tsp. of vanilla powder (it’s seriously crack) and then topped it off with some chopped dates and coconut sugar. Some people choose to only eat bananas while others incorporate greens, dates or both. In my personal experience adding these do not hinder the effectiveness of the cleanse.

Mid-morning Snack: 4 bananas w/coconut sugar

I woke up with a fairly bad headache this morning and let bananas be my medicine! If you have never tried bananas and coconut sugar, you must. It’s not for everyone as it is very sweet but thats how we like it over here! The bananas taste like carmel candy and it’s divine!

Lunch: Chocolate Banana Smoothie

Who says you can’t have chocolate while cleansing? This smoothie was simply 4 frozen bananas blended with 2 tbsp. of cacao powder, a dash of cinnamon and of course coconut sugar. Adding just a little bit of cinnamon to your smoothie will not only enhance the flavour but can help control candida, blood sugar levels and increase circulation!

Afternoon Snack: Açaí Banana Smoothie

IMG_4521Around 3:30 I started to get really hungry so I made yet again, another smoothie. I didn’t want to completely fill myself up though so I used only 3 three bananas this time. I added 2 tbsp. of freeze dried açaí powder for colour and 2 tsp. of Lucuma for extra sweetness. It was very refreshing! I think adding a bit of lime juice would make it out of this world!

Fitness: 5km Walk/Run/Jog

It was such a lovely day out today so I had no excuse but to get my lymphatic system pumping! Usually I will run/jog the entire distance but since I have ben having problems with my right shin I took it easy today. I run along this river/gold course near where I live and it’s so surreal. There is also a really steep hill that I run up and down a few times and it builds muscle like you wouldn’t believe! I followed up afterwards with some push-ups, abs and squats. 😉

Post run snack: 1 Banana w/coconut sugar

IMG_3306You guessed it. More bananas! I was still hungry even after that smoothie but I didn’t want to stuff myself before running. While debating on what to make for dinner I snacked on another banana with coconut sugar to re-fuel my cells!

Dinner: Vanilla Bean Nice Cream

I tried making a layered banana smoothie and ended up failing miserably so I opted for some more nice cream, because you just can’t go wrong with this stuff! It hit the spot thats for sure.

Looking back on my experience today I can confirm that banana island isn’t as sustainable compared to other mono islands I have tried. We all know how much I love bananas but even I was getting sick of them towards my last meal. I wasn’t as satiated as I usually am. Within a few minutes after eating, I was hungry again! I think that mono islands are amazing and a safe way to get fast results and enhance the detoxification process. However, it is more sustainable to say eat a mono meal of watermelon for breakfast than bananas for lunch and potatoes for dinner etc. rather than eat the same thing all day long. I believe you will get just as great results but possibly just not as fast. I also think that doing a mono island once or twice a week is a fabulous idea for when you just want to feel extra good!

I am going to see if I can stick to banana island for a few more days, but those sweet potatoes in my pantry are haunting me!
