Since January is coming to an end I thought it would be a great opportunity to write a blog post talking about some things I have been loving during the month!
So without further ado, let’s just dive right in! Also, make sure to leave a comment at the end of this post telling me some of your favourite things!
Okay first; Food. Because food.
1. Sunflower Butter
I have been loving sunflower butter. I decided to take a break from nuts for awhile and decided to substitute this for my typical almond butter and peanut butter. It has an earth-y taste, so it won’t suit everyones taste buds. Sunflower seeds are especially high in Vitamin E so they are great for your skin, a nice bonus! I always pair mine with banana, cinnamon and vegan chocolate chips or some organic raspberry jam.
For the longest time I have loved the BluePrint Organic beet juice, but Happy Planet just came out with a new line of cold pressed juices and this one fascinated me! It also has celery and lime for some extra zest and flavour. I honestly didn’t love it at first, but once I drank more, I wanted more! It’s great for a post-workout drink, thanks to the hydrating properties of the cucumber.
3. Vega Protein Powders
I have never been a protein fanatic, I like my carbs. 😉 I did go through a phase last year and ate way too many protein bars. It’s not a bad thing, but it isn’t something the body needs in abundance. However, my mom got me hooked on these protein powders! They all have 20 grams of plant based protein per serving, 2-6 servings of greens, zero grams of fat, and essential digestive enzymes extracted from papaya! Plus, they taste great! My staples are just the Vanilla and Chocolate but I also like the Mocha and Coconut Almond.
4. Amazing Grass Powders
I have been loving the convenience of mixing these powders with my water and getting a boost of energy and a serving or two of detoxifying greens! I was getting sick of my typical lemon water and I decided to try these instead! Not gonna lie, it looks like swamp water…I got weird stares at school, I didn’t try to explain, I let their minds wander. Despite the grotesque colour, the taste is really nice and is filled with nutrients. I try to drink one a day and it is now a staple in my life, I will not go without them!
This is kind of a weird one, but I have really been enjoying rice as a cooked mono meal. I have been resorting to it if I can’t make up my mind or if I want something very simple. It’s also typically more hydrating than my usual cooked dinners because it’s steamed. I add a little bit of coconut oil (because I hate sticky rice) and use 1/4 cup of organic white and 1/4 cup of brown basmati. It’s gluten free and easy on the digestive system, so its a win-win!
Now here are some of my favourite beauty products of the month:
1. Hurraw! Coconut lip balm
This lip balm is everything I have ever dreamed of. It’s super moisturizing and it smells so divine, I could swallow it whole! They have so many flavours, or rather scents, ranging from root beer to green tea. I love the coconut, because it’s coconut, duh. It’s 100% vegan and raw! A superb find.
2. Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Tint in “Enchanted”
Staying on the topic of lip products, these tarte lip stains have also been one of my favourites. They are long lasting, moisturizing, super pigmented and they have a minty-tingly feeling on the lips, which personally I love (anything minty, you can count me in). I got the colour that matches closets to my natural lip colour, but just bumped up a few shades. It has been my go to lip product when I just want something quick that will brighten up my face and make me look more put together.
3. Jojoba Oil
It’s been all the rage. I only hopped on the wagon late last year (I still haven’t registered that it’s 2015…what.) I have been using it to wash off my makeup and it works like a gem. Since I am prone to dry patches as well, it helps to seal some moisture in my skin. I also use it on my body after I get out of the shower, on the ends of my hair and for intense moisture; I slather it all over my face and do a steam facial. It doesn’t clog my pores and leaves my skin silky smooth, without a greasy residue.
4. Castor Oil
THEE holy grail for long eyelashes! I originally bought this to pair with the jojoba oil I mentioned above for the oil cleansing method. Long story short, it wasn’t working how I expected it to. What I did notice though was how thick and long my eyelashes were getting! I already have fairly long eyelashes but they are so much healthier now! You can even use it on your eyebrows and hair (though I wouldn’t recommend the hair I think, it’s pretty viscous stuff, but it has worked for others!).
5. Oil of Oregano
My mom has been supplementing with oil of oregano for the past few years. She swears by it, but I could never bring myself to try it because the taste is really strong. I got used to the scent and finally took the plunge. I don’t know why I waited so long! It is great if you get little sores in your mouth (I used to all the time, even eating a raw food diet), it is antibacterial so it really cleans your mouth and quite frankly, your whole body! If you get sick, look no further. Take a couple drops a day in water, orange juice or just wing it like I do and squirt it in your mouth! I started gradually but I try to take half of a vile per day. It does wonders for complexion and overall cleansing. However, it is not meant to be used long term as it can be toxic to the body in high doses.
Okay now for some random favourites!
1. Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver
The last time I read for pleasure was in July. Just last week I decided to pull out my favourite book, Delirium by Lauren Oliver. I first read it when I was in seventh grade. I would sit outside on my veranda in the rain, bundled in a blanket and read for hours. I missed it so much that I decide to render all of that nostalgia and lose myself in this series for awhile. I had already read the first two books and got a quarter of the way through the third book. I remembered nothing. Well not nothing, but it was very vague. I finished these books within a 5 day span and well, you just have to read them for yourself! It is the best book series. I firmly stand by that statement. It was even better than I remember it. It’s heartbreaking chaos and I love it (and hate it at the same time). Here’s a link if you want to read what it’s all about: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11614718-delirium
2. This is the Life by Two Door Cinema Club
You might recognize this song from the movie Soul Surfer. It’s just one of those feel good, feel happy songs. It reminds of Hawaii and living life to the fullest. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ed8NBPmits
I have an obsession…addiction…problem! I could stay online for
hours days looking at bikinis. Is there a prescription for that? My bank account will be slowly dissipating until spring break. I strongly believe that I was never meant to be born in Canada, I belong in Hawaii! I know my way around there better than my own home. I am really a mermaid, I swear. Bikinis, bikinis, bikinis…Currently I have been obsessing over Mikoh (pictured above) and their cool strappy designs, I also like Triangl (typical) and Eau Paix Vie because the name is adorable (it means Water Peace Life in French.) I need to be on a beach ASAP.
I hope you enjoyed this lengthy post! What were some of your favourites this month?
